Tokyo Plans to Build Statues Honoring Gundam and Zaku

Statues based off of the RX-78 Gundam and the Zaku II to be constructed in front of Inagi-Naganuma Station.

The city of Inagi has announced their plans to build a statue in honor of the original RX-78 Gundam to stand outside of the Inagi-Naganuma Station.

The statue is to stand at about 3 to 4 meters high and will hopefully become an attraction for tourists and fans of the franchise for years to come. A preliminary estimate of the cost of constructing the statue rang in at about 5.5 million yen (around 537,240 USD). Shortly after the construction of the RX-78, the city will begin construction on its homage to the Zaku II Mobile Suit.

The construction of the statue will also be in honor of famed Inagi-born character designer Kunio Okawara. Okawara was the creator of the original RX-78 and Zaku II designs, as well as the designer for Inagi's official city mascot.

A similar statue of the RX-78 was constructed in 2008 in front of Suginami's Kami-Igusa station. Official dates have not been set on the construction or unveiling of the Inagi-Naganuma statues yet.
